Finding the Control Box

Previous pageReturn to chapter overviewNext page

Finding the control box is normally not all that difficult, but in some cases it could be inside a cabinet, up in the ceiling, or hiding in a crawl space. It could even have been dry walled over since it was installed.

It will normally be near the main breaker box, in the electrical room, if there is one. Failing that, try behind the furnace, or in a closet.

Here is a picture of what a Control box normally looks like. It is usually about 1ft x 1ft and may or may not have a lock, or screws in the side holding it closed. Screws are far more common, and easier to deal with.

Although the locks are easily defeated if it is important enough, by prying it open, at the closest point to the lock, with a screwdriver.
